Charles Edwin Stephens, age 87, of Axtell, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. A man of deep faith, steady strength, and quiet wisdom, Charles lived a full and meaningful life centered on faith, family, and hard work.
Born in Sulphur Springs, TX and raised in Clovis, New Mexico, Charles was an Eagle Scout who loved the outdoors from an early age. He proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a long career in the finance and banking industry.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Sue Carol, and together they built a beautiful life, raising their children—daughter Tracy and son Monty—in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1994, they moved to their beloved farm in Axtell, just outside of Waco, where Charles embraced his passion for ranching, gardening, and the peaceful rhythm of country life. He found great joy in raising cattle, planting vegetables, and—most of all—sharing his love for nature with his grandkids and great grandkids, each of whom held a very special place in his heart.
Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. After Sue Carol’s passing in 2010, he remained a pillar of strength for his family, always holding tightly to the faith that carried him through life. He was a longtime and faithful member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, where he found community and spiritual strength.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Florence Stephens, and his beloved wife, Sue Carol Stephens.
He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Stephens Pounds and son-in-law Scott Pounds, and his son, Monty Stephens. He was a proud and loving Grandaddy to six grandchildren—Rachel, Michael, Kristyn, Sarah, Hayden, and Maddi—and two bonus grandchildren, Noah and Jordyn. He was also a cherished Great Grandaddy to eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and were deeply loved.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and integrity that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
