Daniel Shown

August 23, 1959 — February 27, 2026

Daniel Robert Shown was born on August 23, 1959, to John Ben Shown and Earnestine Yarbrough. Raised in Waco, Texas, Daniel grew up with strong values of faith, family, and service—principles that would guide him throughout his life.

As a young man, Daniel was a standout athlete for the La Vega Pirates in Waco. His talent and determination on the gridiron earned him a football scholarship to Cisco Junior College, where he played linebacker for two years. While at Cisco, Daniel obtained an associate degree in Criminal Justice, laying the foundation for the career he had dreamed of since high school.

In June 1980, Daniel was accepted into the Texas Department of Public Safety Academy. Upon graduation, Trooper Shown received his first duty station in Fort Worth. In 1982, he transferred to Hillsboro, and in 1984, he returned home to Waco, where he proudly patrolled the highways and county roads of McLennan County. Wearing the silver tan uniform and Stetson he had long envisioned, Daniel fulfilled his calling with integrity and honor. He was known as a professional lawman who treated everyone with fairness and respect. For Daniel, law enforcement was never just a job—it was a true calling.

Daniel’s life changed forever on December 16, 1988, a night that ended his ability to patrol but never diminished his spirit. Though he endured many long and lonely nights in the years that followed, he never expressed regret. Instead, he found new purpose in serving God and sharing his testimony. He became an inspiration to fellow officers and citizens alike, demonstrating courage, faith, and perseverance through life’s hardest storms.

Even beyond his years of active duty, Daniel continued to serve his law enforcement family. The Daniel Shown Bill, passed by the Texas Legislature, mandates that state police officers medically retired due to job-related injuries receive a lifetime salary with current pay raise increments, ensuring that others would be protected and cared for in ways that reflect Daniel’s sacrifice.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers J. Frank Yarbrough, James Edward Yarbrough, David Henry Murphy, and John Oscar Shown. He is survived by his sister Betty Rice; his brother Tom Yarbrough (Sheryl); his sisters Diana Sauter (Allen) and Rachel Dunn (David); and many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was especially close to his three nephews in Waco--Gary, Kevin, and Jason Spicer. Daniel was particularly fond of Gary, whom he treated like a son. Gary, his wife Crystal, and their children, Haylee, Krista and Josh, shared countless treasured memories with Daniel. Gary recalls boat fishing trips and days spent golfing alongside his uncle, moments filled with laughter, stories, and quiet wisdom.

Daniel loved fishing, golfing, and ranching, but above all, he loved his God. He was known to sing gospel songs proudly while talking with friends on the telephone, never hesitant to share his faith. Through every storm he weathered, Daniel stood firm, trusting that brighter days would come.

Today, we find comfort in imagining that Daniel now patrols the highways of heaven. After years of enduring hard rains, he has at last found the heavenly sunrays that follow. His legacy of faith, service, and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him and all who benefit from the protections secured in his name.

Daniel’s life was one of courage, devotion, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
