Waco, Texas - Jennie Burton (Slade), a loving matriarch, creative spirit, and devout woman of faith, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, in Waco, Texas, just shy of her 104th birthday. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 30, 1921, to Lloyd and Augusta Slade, Jennie's remarkable life was a testament to her generous heart and caring spirit.
Jennie married the love of her life, Richard Burton, on October 20, 1942. They shared a beautiful life together until his passing. Jennie was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Jim Burton, her niece Sandy Underwood, and her nephew Bobby Slade.
A woman of many talents, Jennie loved to create with her hands. Her home was filled with the beauty of her own making, from intricate ceramics and lovingly sewn clothing to delicate doilies and countless crocheted blankets that warmed both body and soul. She was an avid gardener, finding immense joy in nurturing life from the soil, growing bountiful corn and tomatoes, and surrounding herself with a vibrant array of flowers. Her collections of teacups and saucers, along with her cherished Hummels, reflected her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship.
Jennie's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her favorite Bible story, the creation in Genesis, highlighted her deep reverence for God's work. She lived her faith through her actions, always ready to extend a helping hand and offering a caring spirit to those around her. Her generosity extended beyond her personal relationships, as she made it a practice to regularly donate to the Wounded Warrior Project and the VFW, demonstrating her profound respect and gratitude for those who served.
Though she held a few jobs throughout her long life, Jennie dedicated a significant portion of her career to public service, retiring as a McLennan County Tax Clerk. She also loved to share stories with her family, especially those recounting her time in Germany, offering glimpses into a life filled with varied experiences.
Jennie leaves behind a vast and loving family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her son, Larry Burton (Ashley); her daughter, Marie Foga; her grandchildren, Debbie Fett, Deniz Sarigul (Melih), Marcy Stott (Guy), Kenny Burton (Samantha), and Chuck Foga (Brittany). Her legacy continues through her 14 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring love and joy she brought into the world.
